It's a new year and a good resolution would be to read at least one book a month. If you're not a reader but would like to begin, joining a book group is a good way to start. The selected books may not always be one you would have chosen but you'll be surprised how many you will enjoy. We meet on the last Tuesday of each month (excluding December) at a member's home. We are a group of ladies who like to read and get together to discuss books, hot topics and many other subjects. We welcome any newcomers that would like to come and see what a book club is about.
Our January selection is Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky...and no, it isn't written in French. It takes place in France in 1940 - 41 during the occupation of the Germans. The author tells the story of men and women thrown together in circumstances beyond their control. It is a terrific character study of how people must learn to coexist with the enemy, in their town, their homes and even their hearts.
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See is on tap for February . This novel takes place in nineteenth century China. It is a story about the friendship of two young girls who find solace, developing a bond that keeps their spirits alive but when a misunderstanding arises, that friendship suddenly threatens to dissolve. They both endure the agony of footbinding and together reflect upon their arranged marriages, shared loneliness, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood. It's a beautifully written story of friendship and love.
In March we are reading the second novel by the author of The Kite Runner, Khakad Hosseini. This one is A Thousand Splendid Suns, a breathtaking story set against the volatile events of Afghanistan's last thirty years, that puts the fear, hope and faith of this country in human terms. It is a striking, heart wrenching novel of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.
